Sallys House Helps 1000th Child
04/15/2008
In just under six years of operation, The Salvation Army has sheltered and cared for 1000 boys and girls through the Sallys House program. Sallys House has reached this mark by providing temporary care for as many as 18 foster children at a time. Children are admitted to the program immediately after being removed from an unfit home in or near Spokane County. Until a permanent home is secured, children live at Sallys House, take part in daily activities, and receive counseling and assessments from the on-site Professional Services program.
Recently there were three brothers who came to stay at Sallys House. They had been removed from their home after being severely neglected by their mother. When they first came into the home, they exclaimed out loud how warm it was. They had been accustomed to occasionally living without heat and using blankets and sweaters to keep warm.
The boys stayed at Sallys House for only ten days, but their social worker got an ear-full about how much fun they had during their limited time in our care. They got to go swimming every day, the caregivers were so nice and helpful, they each received a stuffed animal and toys to play with, and there was always plenty of good food to eat. Because of Sallys House, these boys, like the 997 other children helped by this program, were given the basic care all children deserve along with a lasting impression about how life could and should be.
Many of the items and services Sallys House provides for the children in our care are made possible by the generosity of the Spokane Community. You can support this program with a donation of time, money, or resources.
